Kolkata Metro will cover 90 km by 2025 and more than 130 km by 2027.

The city’s Metro network now spans 60 km, stitching the central business district with eastern Kolkata and its southern and northern fringes, catering to passengers from the districts of North and South 24 PGS, Howrah, and Hooghly as well.

The network includes the 31 km of the North-South (Blue) line along the city’s north-south axis from New Garia to Dakshineswar, 9.2 km of East-West Metro’s Sector V-Sealdah section (Green Line 1), 4.8 km of East-West Metro’s Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section, 8 km of the Joka-Taratala (Purple) line, and 5.4 km of the New Garia-Ruby (Orange) line.

This month Kolkata Metro celebrates its 40th anniversary as the rapid transit system was inaugurated on October 24, 1984, the first metro system of India.

The carrier has a number of events lined up for the 40th anniversary: a new logo, a stamp, and a first-day cover; a heritage walk; walkathons; an art competition at Esplanade station; and a trip on a non-AC NGEF rake.
